High bacteria levels in the Gulf of Mexico off Bolivar Peninsula have
prompted a no-swimming advisory there, Galveston County health officials said
Tuesday.
Routine testing of waters detected unsafe bacteria levels at 12 Bolivar
locations, according to the Galveston County Health District. The sites are
Retilon Road; Magnolia Lane; Helen Boulevard; O'Neil Road; Crystal Beach Road;
Gulf Shores Drive; Alberdie Road - Emerald Beach No. 2; Barbados Road; Gilmore
Street Access; Center Road; Driftwood and Deens Street.
No elevated bacteria levels were found on Galveston Island, said Kurt
Koopmann, spokesman at the Galveston County Health District.
When elevated bacteria levels are detected, water samples are taken daily
until the tests return to normal. Results of water sampling on Tuesday were
being studied, Koopmann said.
Under the advisory, swimming is discouraged. Subsequent testing will
determine how long the advisory will continue, Koopmann said.
